Chapter Twenty-One

Pray as if everything depended on God and work

as if everything depended on you.

Saint Ignatius of Loyola

Johanan rubbed his sleepy eyes with the sleeve of his robe. His other hand steadied the ladder leading down from the rooftop sleeping quarters as Marcus scampered down. Aprius was already heading toward the beach, the supply bag with their breakfast slung over his shoulder.

He looked out toward the sea and noticed the sail of a lone vessel already close to the horizon. The rest of the fleet was still on the beach. Only a few of the fisherman were yet tending to their boats. When Johanan reached the foot of the ladder, he pointed to the horizon and asked Tullius, “Who’s getting an early start?”

“No fishing for them today. I’ve sent them to ask the provincial governor for a magistrate to hear the case of Solon.” Tullius sighed.

Johanan put his hand on Tullius’ shoulder. “How likely is it he’ll do that?”

Tullius shook his head. “I think he’ll refuse our request. He’s unlikely to send someone on the three to five day journey to hear an accusation brought by some plebs on an unimportant island. He’s more likely to tell us to bring Solon and the witnesses to the capital in Corinth.”

Johanan stood in silence.

Tullius looked over at Johanan. “We rarely get the Romans involved in our affairs. They stop by to collect their taxes, but mostly let us go our own way.”

“How do you usually administer justice?”

“On the rare occasions when we do need to punish someone, our elders prescribe hard labor or a short period of banishment. The guilty accept that, because Roman justice would rarely be as lenient.”

Tullius sighed again and patted Johanan on the shoulder. “It’s in God’s hands now.” He gave him a gentle nudge toward the beach. “Good fishing today, my son.”
