Clara let out a soft breath at his words. He examined her expression and realized that something was wrong. What a fool he was for allowing himself to thank that her usual pragmatism could withstand such a harsh discussion.

“My apologies for bringing up such topics and distressing you. It must be a shock to learn that your employer has a dark, problematic past.” Josh walked around his desk and sat in the chair next to her.

“I knew about your travels and the books you wrote about them. But attacks in the past and even more recently? I did not ken about those.”

“I have done my best to keep those out of public view. At least until this one. They grow bolder now.”

“What will you do?” she asked.

“Finlaggan and Hepburn are checking into several things for me. I have hired some—” how should he say it? “—some additional help to see to keeping the house, the area and the people who live and work here safer.”

He wanted them safe. He needed her to be safe. If anyone knew what she’d seen and even that they’d spoken of the papers and sketch, and the Treasure, she would be in danger. Whoever was behind this would see her as a potential target, so he would keep her safe, even if it meant sending her away.

“Clara,” he said, taking hands in his.

He’d not noticed that she was shivering, or trembling, until he touched her very cold hands. He was wrong to speak to her of all this. Wrong to need her to see him as more than the viscount who’d hired her to keep his house. Wrong to want more from her than her efforts in his service.

“I’m sorry to say that you could be in danger, too. If anyone kens that you not only saw that drawing but also read the documents with it, you will be part of this.”

“That sketch? Why did they not take it with them if that’s what interested them?” she asked. “Why leave it behind?”

He hesitated to answer her, for
