Flynn

It's already nearly dinnertime by the time I've finished cleaning up. I almost thought I heard someone come to the shop while I was busy, but I can't be too sure about that because no one's there when I come out. Why swing by but not stop to see me? Why not call out if you're there? So I must've just heard something. I can't even be certain that I did hear anyone in the first place.

Maybe it’s a bit ridiculous, but I wait until after I’ve eaten a quick meal at home before calling up the guys to see if they want to get together to play some basketball, football, whatever.

First, I call Michael.

“Flynn! How are you?” Michael asks.

“I was wondering if—”

“Not right now,” he says.

“Not right now?” I repeat, baffled. “What do you mean?”

“I’m busy tonight,” he says.

“Oh?”

“Yeah. It’s our wedding anniversary tonight, and my wife and I… We have plans. Big plans. I don’t know if I’ll be up for anything tomorrow. I don’t plan on being able to walk tomorrow. She definitely won’t be walking tomorrow either.”

“Oh, yeah?” I grin. “Go get her, tiger.”

Michael laughs and hangs up.

I just shake my head. First of all, I still hate using phones. Second of all, I can hear how happy and excited he is to spend the night with his wife, whether he plans on taking her out and wining and dining her or if he has a night planned in. It might be easier to have a night in, considering it sounds like he plans on having a lot of time spent in the bedroom.

Next up, I call Jake.

“Flynn, listen, I would love to play, but I can’t.”

“You can’t,” I say, dismayed. “Why not? It’s not like you have a wedding anniversary tonight.”

Jake laughs. “No, of course not! You have to be married for that.”

“And you most certainly are not married.”

“Not yet, my friend, not yet, but that doesn’t mean that I can’t ever be married one day.”

“You told me you planned on being a bachelor forever! That you didn’t want to ever settle down with one woman, that it’s better to play the field at all times,” I protest.

“Yes, well, men can change and mature and come to the realization that the perfect woman—”

“You met the perfect woman?” I ask skeptically.

“There is no such a thing as a perfect woman,” Jake protests. “It’s a matter of finding the woman who is perfect for you. That’s all I’m saying.”

“And you found her,” I say, still skeptical.

“I’m saying that I hope I did,” Jake says.

I shake my head as I start to pace. I feel so amped up but also so alone. It’s a terrible feeling, and I almost feel like I’m trapped in a cage.

"So, you have a hot date tonight."

“Man, oh, man, do I have a hot date tonight!” Jake declares. “Who knows? Maybe if this date goes well, I’ll have to introduce her to you all.”

“After one date?”

“No, no, son! I’ve been out with her
