The next morning, I check over my schedule. I only have one tour scheduled, and I call up the head of the family and ask if we can possibly reschedule. The gentleman just starts to laugh as he explains he was just about to call me to ask the same. Their centuricar needs some repairs, so they’re not in the area yet. The earliest they will be is in two days. We arrange a new time, and I should smile because it’s a simple fix. Everything is working out, only it’s not. So much is going on, and I’m just flat-out unhappy.

So I call up Latoya.

“Girl, you have been avoiding me for so long I thought maybe I should start calling the morgues or hospitals or something,” Latoya says. “You’re making me so worried. Just a text, girl, would’ve been enough, but no, you had to go radio silent. And after your blind date too! You still haven’t told me anything about it, and I am dying—”

“You aren’t dying,” I say flatly.

For once, Latoya is silent.

I’m silent too.

She’s the one to talk next. “What happened?” she asks quietly.

“It’s not a conversation for a phone call, and I just so happened to clear out my schedule.”

“Did you? Hmm. Jamar and Mekell can watch the kids for a few hours. Where do you want to meet up?”

“Jamar and Mekell?”

“Yeah, the girl he’s crushing on? They’re young and cute together, and she’s mature, and I like her. I don’t think they’ll last. I mean, they’re too young and all, but they’re old enough to watch the kids. This sounds like it’s important. I can’t remember the last time you cleared your schedule during the week.”

“A woman’s gotta do what a woman’s gotta do.”

“So, where we meeting up?”

“I’m in the mood for some spicy food.”

“I know just the place.”
