As time passed, the sick list and the death roll went on mounting. At the peak period there were more than 1,300 prisoners in hospital, and of the remaining seven hundred and forty a large percentage were treated daily for ulcers, sore feet and many other ailments.

About the middle of July 1944 the camp was broken up. Five hundred prisoners were sent to Amboina for further work and the remainder were returned to Java on the Maros Maru under the command of Flight-Lieutenant Blackwood.1

As far as can be ascertained, of the original number of 2,070 British and Dutch prisoners who left Sourabaya for Haroekoe in April 1943 less than 50 per cent were still alive at the end of the war.
