The citizens of London were very unruly … and wholly devoted to His Majesty [so they planned] a design to get him among them, settle him in parliament house and so conclude a peace. [However] the cabal of Parliamentary officers sitting at Putney, made [Charles] think of an escape, if he could well know to what place he could go. Jane Whorwood, knowing this, she went to William Lilly the astrologer, living in the Strand.

Her communication with the king was eased by father and brother-in-law, and she approached Lilly on Charles’s behalf with evident urgency. The Scots had advised the king not to trust Cromwell or the army, knowing, with the moderate Presbyterian MPs and City merchants, that an alliance between king and army could only work to their (and eventually the king’s) disadvantage.20

Elias Ashmole was reminded in 1668 by Lilly, a friend since 1646, that they both knew Jane Whorwood. Lilly was justifying himself to his Royalist friend after the Restoration.
