Leitner had a spectacular act in which horses would walk across his abdomen via a plank. Unfortunately, one of his horses kicked him in the face and that put an end to both his good looks and his athletic career.

Bernhard Leitner, the Chain Breaker

Bernhard Leitner, “the Chain Breaker,” was born on June 25, 1865, in Elberfeld [died 1959]. He performed at the Winter Circus with Lomberg. He broke chains by a contraction of the biceps or contraction of the thorax. Leitner also lifted men at arm’s length and bent pressed a man weighing 65 kilos five or six times in a row. Lomberg played opposite him. Their success was very great. They traveled all over France, most notably in the north where I saw them in Lille on August 27, 1890, when they performed in the Circus Rancy.

Leitner had a tall but ­well-developed physique with a chest of 118, 42 in the arms, 33 forearms, and 44 in the neck. But his lower body lacked a little; his legs were thin but without being completely lanky.38
