Chapter 11
âI think we needed that,â I said, finally.
Ryder nodded. âIâd hate to think our relationship is all about sex â and I donât think that it is â but sex does help keep it on an even keel.â
âWeâre passionate people, we need some sort of outlet.â
âYeah. And this is a healthy one, all things considered
I shrugged. âYou say that, but you damn near killed me there.â
âMe? What about you? Iâm lucky to have escaped without permanent injury.â
âDo you think itâs a problem that we deal with our disagreements with angry sex?â
âI donât think anything about what we just did was a problem.â
We chuckled together in the darkness, and for a moment it was just us and the distant sound of the waves lapping the shore.
It didnât last long.
âCassandra? Ryder?â
It was Bai.
Ryder and I hastily pulled our clothes back to something approaching decency as we went back toward the cave to meet her as she came toward our impromptu love nest.
âYeah, weâre here.â
Bai looked relieved. âSorry to disturb you. I heard you⦠fighting.â
I nodded. âProbably sounded that way but, actually, we were having rough sex.â
Bai colored. âI⦠I was being⦠Okayâ¦â
âIs something happening?â asked Ryder, giving the poor kid an easy out from the awkward situation Iâd created.
âI think someone is coming.â
âSomeone?â
âPeople. I saw headlights.â
Ryder and I shared a look.
It could be Jack. Or it could just be passersby. But knowing our luck, it was neither of those things.
Hurrying back toward the mouth of the cave, we were met by the best thing we could have seen. Jack and Bathsheba were coming toward us. But my initial joy at seeing them was quickly evaporating. They were moving cautiously, almost skulking, clearly afraid of being seen.
Which meant they werenât the only ones out there.
âGood job today, guys,â said Jack as we met. âBut Iâm afraid itâs not over yet.â
âWhatâs happening?â Ryder was instantly alert.
âLocal law enforcement,â said Bathsheba. It was the first time Iâd heard her speak and her clipped tones made me wonder if she had a Guard background. She talked like Ryder. A pang of jealousy skewered me at the thought of how much better of a couple the two of them might make. Damn it, this was exactly what Iâd told Ryder off for thinking.
âSomeone must have reported seeing something suspicious,â Bathsheba continued. âTheyâre searching their way along the cliffs. Weâve got transport not far from here, but weâre not going to get away with the cops right there.â
âDiversion?â suggested Ryder.
âThatâs what Iâm thinking,â said Jack. âYou can leave it to my people. Youâve done enough for one day.â
But Ryder shook his head. âIt should be us. If someone reported us then they might have already seen us. No sense in showing them new faces to recognize.â
âHeâs right,â said Bathsheba, instantly.
He was right. But I knew that the reason was a lie. If it was left to Jackâs own men, then Ryder was afraid humans might get killed. He would create a diversion without endangering innocent lives, and he would be prepared to lose his own in the process.
