Chapter 11

“I think we needed that,” I said, finally.

Ryder nodded. “I’d hate to think our relationship is all about sex – and I don’t think that it is – but sex does help keep it on an even keel.”

“We’re passionate people, we need some sort of outlet.”

“Yeah. And this is a healthy one, all things considered

I shrugged. “You say that, but you damn near killed me there.”

“Me? What about you? I’m lucky to have escaped without permanent injury.”

“Do you think it’s a problem that we deal with our disagreements with angry sex?”

“I don’t think anything about what we just did was a problem.”

We chuckled together in the darkness, and for a moment it was just us and the distant sound of the waves lapping the shore.

It didn’t last long.

“Cassandra? Ryder?”

It was Bai.

Ryder and I hastily pulled our clothes back to something approaching decency as we went back toward the cave to meet her as she came toward our impromptu love nest.

“Yeah, we’re here.”

Bai looked relieved. “Sorry to disturb you. I heard you… fighting.”

I nodded. “Probably sounded that way but, actually, we were having rough sex.”

Bai colored. “I… I was being… Okay…”

“Is something happening?” asked Ryder, giving the poor kid an easy out from the awkward situation I’d created.

“I think someone is coming.”

“Someone?”

“People. I saw headlights.”

Ryder and I shared a look.

It could be Jack. Or it could just be passersby. But knowing our luck, it was neither of those things.

Hurrying back toward the mouth of the cave, we were met by the best thing we could have seen. Jack and Bathsheba were coming toward us. But my initial joy at seeing them was quickly evaporating. They were moving cautiously, almost skulking, clearly afraid of being seen.

Which meant they weren’t the only ones out there.

“Good job today, guys,” said Jack as we met. “But I’m afraid it’s not over yet.”

“What’s happening?” Ryder was instantly alert.

“Local law enforcement,” said Bathsheba. It was the first time I’d heard her speak and her clipped tones made me wonder if she had a Guard background. She talked like Ryder. A pang of jealousy skewered me at the thought of how much better of a couple the two of them might make. Damn it, this was exactly what I’d told Ryder off for thinking.

“Someone must have reported seeing something suspicious,” Bathsheba continued. “They’re searching their way along the cliffs. We’ve got transport not far from here, but we’re not going to get away with the cops right there.”

“Diversion?” suggested Ryder.

“That’s what I’m thinking,” said Jack. “You can leave it to my people. You’ve done enough for one day.”

But Ryder shook his head. “It should be us. If someone reported us then they might have already seen us. No sense in showing them new faces to recognize.”

“He’s right,” said Bathsheba, instantly.

He was right. But I knew that the reason was a lie. If it was left to Jack’s own men, then Ryder was afraid humans might get killed. He would create a diversion without endangering innocent lives, and he would be prepared to lose his own in the process.
