Chapter 6

Ashley held onto the wagon seat with both hands.

Brantley drove slowly, hitting the ruts in the dirt road slowly.

But the ruts were still rather deep in places.

Brantley seemed quite adept at handling the reins. Almost like he did this every day.

“So…” Ashley said. “I seemed to have lost my car.”

“Were you traveling alone?” he asked, pulling slightly on the reins to steer the horse around a particularly deep rut.

“Yes,” she said. “I was on my way to work.”

He looked at her sideways.

“What kind of work?” he asked.

“Teaching,” she said.

“Ah,” he smiled. “Of course. We need teachers like you.”

Ashley released her hold on the seat long enough to pull her hair back out of her face.

“I’ll send one of my guys out tomorrow to look for it.”

“Did you have one horse or two?”

She looked at him blankly for a moment, then laughed.

“More like two hundred,” she said.

He laughed, too.

“That’s a lot of horses,” he said.

Ashley straightened, wishing for her soft leather seat.

“How much longer before we get to Nashville?” she asked.

“Not much,” he said, keeping his eyes on the horses. “Do you have a place to stay?”

“Actually, no. I was going to find something when I got there.”

“There’s an inn this side of town,” he said. “I can drop you off there.”

“An inn,” she said. “Sure.”

They rode along in silence for several minutes.

An eagle swooped toward them, then shot off toward the sky.

“Wow,” she said. “An eagle.”

“Did you know that the eagle is the national bird?” he asked.

“I might have heard something about that,” she said.

They rounded a corner and she caught a glimpse of the river up ahead. Using the dirt road, they would be coming into Nashville by a remote route, of course.

They passed a log cabin with chickens and cows lingering around the lawn.

Then a few minutes later, they passed another log cabin.

This must be a really rural area.

“Where do you live?” she asked.

“Me?” he glanced over at her. “I have a room downtown. Over the sheriff’s office.”

“Oh,” she said, straightening.

“We’re coming into town,” he said.

Still no evidence of the Nashville skyline.

They followed along the river until the road widened.

As another horse and wagon came toward them, the driver tipped his hat in greeting.

Brantley responded in kind.

As they approached a two-story wooden building, a man on horseback crossed in front of them.

“We’re here at the inn,” Brantley said. “I’ll come around and help you down. Then we’ll go inside and get you a room.”

Before she could tell him that she was capable of getting her own room, he’d jumped down and secured the horse to a hitching post.

Ashley pulled out her phone and held her breath as she checked for service.

Still nothing.

“It’s very nice of you to give me a ride,” she said as he came to stand next to her.”

“But if you don’t mind, I think I’d like to ride in to town with you.”

“You don’t want to stay here?”

She bit her lip and shook her head.

It was just too strange out here with all the reenactors or whatever these people were doing.
