More Cider Detective Ideas
The more you get to know your own taste buds, the better you’ll know if you like a cider or not. But, you also probably have some friends who have similar palates to yours. If your friends or family members like certain things that you know you’ll like, then ask them.
Test Your Detective Work
A good way to see if you understand how to read cider labels and containers is to set up a taste test at home. Pick about three to five ciders, but no more than eight—you don’t want to overwhelm your taste buds yet you want a good sampling for comparisons.
Study the labels and containers, and then, write down your pre-impressions of each cider. Do you think it will be sweet or dry? How sweet or how dry? Other flavor or aroma ideas? Then, line the ciders up, from what you think will be the driest to what you think will be the sweetest. Then, taste and take notes.
How did your actual tastes of the ciders match up to your preconceived notions of the ciders? Were you spot on, or were things not quite how you imagined them to be? If they weren’t quite spot on, why? What factors do you think changed the actual tastes from your impressions? Note those.
