CHAPTER 14

SLEEPING ABOVE THE STARS

The curtain on the back of the truck swung open and we all gasped. A wild-eyed soldier with a baby face poked his head in and looked around. “Be calm and keep your seats,” he started.

“Be calm?” Winston repeated. “We were calm, but when someone tells you that it’s usually time to panic. What is going out there?”

“Debris strikes up ahead,” the man said.

“Is that what just hit the ground? Jesus.”

“We’re gonna be diverting the trucks. It’s a lot worse up the road. We have to navigate around. Nothing to panic about. Just a lot of starting and stopping. Wanted to make sure you folks didn’t get nervous.”

No sooner had he said that than a hailstorm of asteroid shrapnel hit the side of the truck. It sounded like someone had thrown a handful of firecrackers. The soldier outside dropped to the ground and covered his head. The soldiers up in the front shouted and screamed as the truck cranked up again. The other trucks in the convoy pulled off in panic and we followed them.

“Get up!” Derrick yelled and rushed toward the back.

The soldier climbed to his feet and stumbled behind us. Derrick held out his hand and he dove forward to grab it. Derrick pulled him up over the tailgate and he fell into the bed and rolled over onto his back.

“Thanks,” he gasped.

“No problem,” Derrick replied and helped him to his feet. “Derrick,” he said and held his hand out.

“Specialist Hill,” the man replied. “Benson.”

“I think they were gonna leave you, Benson. Not sure what kind of friends you got up there.” Derrick smiled and took his seat on the bench.

“Yeah, I’m gonna kill those guys.” Benson walked up toward the cabin and beat on the wall that separated us. “You almost fucking left me, Sean!” he shouted.

Sean didn’t get the chance to respond. Another round of meteoric confetti hit the ground beside us and the truck fishtailed. The tail end whipped to the left and Benson was slung off his feet and into the bench across from him. He hit headfirst then rolled into the middle of the aisle motionless.

The truck accelerated as more explosions sent shockwaves across the road. The soldiers up front were doing their best impersonation of drunk driving. The car moved sporadically, stopping, and going, swerving from one side to the other. It was like they thought we were being shot at. They were just as likely to drive into one of the falling rocks as they were to avoid it.

Once we hit highway speeds Derrick built up the nerve to check on Benson. He slowly stood up and steadied himself. As the truck continued to sway, he covered the three steps to where Benson was laying.

“Be careful,” Winston warned. “They’re flying all over the road.”

“Just promise you’ll catch me,” Derrick replied with a grin.

He carefully knelt and rolled Benson onto his side. From where I was sitting, I could see how awkwardly his neck was bent. There was an impossible angle between his chin and shoulder, and I knew right then, we had lost another.
