Chapter 14

After the picnic they went their separate ways, but not before Connor asked Elizabeth for a sixth date. He’d invited her to dinner that same night and out of some lust-filled haze she’d said yes.

Now as she sat on the large sofa opposite the windowed-wall looking out onto the lake, she was rethinking everything. Connor had been nothing but open and affectionate with her. Which ironically made her feel like she didn’t know where she stood with him.

Had Mona been wrong in her assessment of him? Her head was screaming at her, flashing red lights. She was in real danger with him. John had been an ideal mate in the sense that she knew that when it ended, it wouldn’t hurt, wouldn’t reach her. But Connor…

This was just supposed to be a one-time thing. A way of living a little by putting her body ahead of her mind. The realities of the situation were too obvious to ignore.

She lived in California, he lived in Ireland. He was a serial bachelor, she was a serious commitment-phobe. She was in the middle of a mid-life crisis or whatever a thirty-five-year-old mess was supposed to be called. She was feeling better, but she still had no idea what she was going to do about her job in San Francisco or where she would even be for the next year. He traveled a lot for work and could be gone again at any moment.

People left, abandoned you, that’s just what they did—better to not get too invested. In what Universe could this possibly end well? End without her getting hurt if they continued this level of real intimacy.

Memories of the night they’d spent together came rushing back. The blood rose to her face again as she remembered what it had felt like to experience so much passion and pleasure that you actually felt like you were leaving your body.

On the other hand, her brain had been in complete control these last ten years. That was ten years of never experiencing that kind of ecstasy. Hell, forget the last ten years, she’d never experienced anything like that ever.

But the bottom line was she didn’t want to get hurt. It wasn’t smart to continue with him and set herself up for something else to get over. She’d just lost Mags.

Her thoughts turned to Mags. How was she supposed to understand or decide anything when she didn’t even know the truth about her parents? All of her frustration surrounding the Connor situation was now laser focused on Mags and her thirty-five-year-old secret.

She crossed the living room to the cabinet that held the box in five quick strides. She took it to the round dining nook and didn’t stop to think about what Mags would say next. She just wanted the truth. She needed answers.

The envelope was pink, there were tiny brown diamonds on it. The number 4 was written in blue ink.
