Chapter 21

Nikki and Dani’s Story

Nikki woke late in the morning of uni games. She hadn’t wanted to sleep in. Rather, she had dreamt of skipping through the airport with two or three bags in tow. But alas, the dream was not to be. Her parents had decided to punish her. For what? For enjoying the company of her boyfriend, Matt, the night before? Even though they hated him, mainly for the colour of his skin, why couldn’t they just understand that it was love? she thought, hopelessly. It was the kind of love that would see them exchange vows, have babies and be together forever, she insisted to her subconscious. At least, that was Nikki’s plan.

Nikki had first been introduced to Matt at a mutual friend’s birthday party and hit it off with him almost instantly. But her parents were quite prominent in the local Aboriginal community and were far from pleased that she was so taken with a “white fella.” The way they said that made her skin crawl. Matt tried very hard to immerse himself in the community, learning about their cultural practices, but the scars of generations tend to run deep.

Nikki hadn’t always valued her heritage, which is why her parents were so hard on her, but it was a double-edged sword. The more they pushed, the more she traded in smoke ceremonies for social smoking or corroborees for night-clubs. Even though Nikki’s parents’ approval was not forthcoming, their relationship held strong for two years. Matt had done his very best to treat Nikki as the princess she always believed herself to be. He purchased several sparkling reminders of his love, adorned her with affection in public places, decorated her cakes in edible diamantes and he even knew what diamantes were. And with the important little things came the fact that he practically never left her side. Matt never really thought anything of this. He was content being her prince or – as several of his friends joked – her servant.

Their relationship didn’t waver at all until Matt decided to leave school and join the army. At times, Cooper, Zack and even Dani didn’t believe that their love would be strong enough to withstand long distance and impending war situations. However, much to their credit and the astonishment of outsiders, their relationship remained stronger than ever. Matt was stationed at a base not far from Cooper and Dani; however, Nikki was not permitted to visit during weekdays, so Matt would see her each weekend to make sure his princess was content.

Nikki suddenly remembered her phone call with Cooper the night before. As one of my best male friends, you’d think he’d be more supportive of me, right? she thought as she shed her satin pyjamas on the floor of her lavish en suite bathroom. She knew that, as the warm water tiptoed upon the smooth surface of her face, Cooper would be enjoying himself, halfway to their destination by now.

Ah, you know what? I’ll just go to Dani’s today and have a girly weekend with her.
