The inside of the ship was as black as the exterior. AJ was sure there had to be some rhyme and reason to the design, but at the moment, he could find none. They stood in a massive room with a silver floor underneath them and black walls with cutouts and grooves in them that made the walls look like rippling ocean waves.

The ceiling was vaulted at least four stories high with the same black structured roof. Light came into the room from tall yellow stands that looked like lava lamps more than street lamps.

AJ stood beside his brother and the other two Marines as his eyes soaked in every detail of information. There were two archways leaving the room that presumably led deeper into the ship, one on the right and the other on the left.

A dozen Sarkan guards leveled their blasters on the group. AJ looked a few of them in the eyes. They weren’t playing.

“You’ve been beamed aboard a Sarkan transport ship.” Freyon Truel entered the room from the right archway. He wore a uniform under his metal armor that looked like a cross between military fatigues and a long robe. “We’re heading to the capital city, where you will be introduced to our leader, Emperor Aeon.”

“Great,” Jones said in a not so quiet sigh under his breath. “Now we’re traveling to an entire city of them.”

“And what do you expect from us while we’re there?” Rambo asked. She grimaced as she rotated the shoulder where she had taken the round. “We’re going to be put on display as some kind of freak show?”

“Nothing like that.” Freyon shook his head, motioning with an open hand to Remmy. “Your party includes a very special person in it. I know the emperor will be delighted to meet you and him.”

“And of course we don’t get a choice in any of this.” AJ gave Freyon a grin that didn’t reach his eyes. He knew people like Freyon. It was everything they weren’t saying that mattered the most. “I wouldn’t imagine it would go well for any of us if Remmy refused anything you asked.”

“No, of course not.” Freyon’s eyes glimmered as he thought about AJ’s words. “We would never imagine hurting anyone of the Gatekeeper’s companions. Any friends of his are friends to the Sarkan Empire.”

Although Freyon was saying all of the right things, there was something in his tone. Something in the way he used his words and where he chose to pause that angered AJ in a manner only his sixth sense understood.

AJ felt heat rise to his face. As soon as he did so, Freyon’s grin widened.

Don’t give him what he wants, AJ told himself. Don’t play into his game. Save your anger for later. If you all are going to get out of this alive, you’re going to need it.

“We’ll be traveling quickly.” Freyon’s smile disappeared from his lips so quickly AJ wondered if it had been there at all. “We will reach the capital city of Maul before the day is out.
