Chapter Eleven

It was difficult to know how much time had passed, aside from there being day and night. Pat usually had a good sense of time, but with no way to check it he was unable to verify his feeling. He simply had to go by his stomach.

“This is probably the way humans in ancient times used to live,” Pat said aloud as he was thinking about it. “No routine aside from eating and foraging, no responsibilities like having to work.”

“It sounds like paradise,” Gwen said, smiling.

“Part of me has always wondered what it would be like to leave civilization and live off the grid, to escape this way of living. It always made me wonder how it came about, because none of us agreed to live this way, we just accept it as the way things are supposed to be done and form our lives around it. Like you said, humans in ancient times never lived like this, so when did it all change?” Mary said.

“I never knew you wanted to go off the grid,” Julian said.

“Yes you did. I spoke to you about it for a long time, but you never wanted to take that risk,” she said.

“Well, it’s all good in theory, but think of everything we’d be giving up,” Julian said with his palms outstretched. “All the healthcare, all the safety of living in a community. In the wild there’s no police force, no nurses, there are no schools either. It would be like living in the Wild West. We might have sacrificed some liberty for the sake of convenience, but it’s a worthy trade in my opinion.”

“And what do you think?” Pat asked, turning to Matthew and Aimee. Matthew glanced towards Aimee before he spoke.

“I don’t really know what to say. I guess I’ve never thought about it too much. I just figured that you go to school and then you get a job, and everything just works out. I suppose the world isn’t like I thought it would be though,” Matthew said, his voice faltering.

“Everyone has that moment. When we’re kids, we think that everything is going to work out, for the best and it’s all going to follow a laid-out plan. But then we grow up and realize there is no plan and we have to muddle through it ourselves,” Pat said.

“What about you Aimee, do you have any thoughts on the matter?” He was trying to coax her into speaking.

She was pale, and still seemed to be shaken from the car crash, which he imagined she would be for a long time. It must have been such a shocking moment to crash into that tree, then to wake up and realize that her father had died. She was sullen, but Pat knew it was better for her to engage with living people rather than lose herself in the shadows of her mind.

“I think maybe it’s about time the world is fighting back,” she said softly. The others looked at each other, unsure if they had heard her correctly.
