Finn

“She wanted me, and I her. What was the point in conversation?”

—Finn Burke, Lost

Around ten or so, Zoe and Bob said they’d best be going. It was a good thing, too, as Pippa’s eyes had begun to droop. Finn contemplated carrying her to bed, so she could spend the night in one of his unused guest rooms. Or, much more in line with what he wanted himself, he could take her to his bed.

Images of his mouth on Pippa’s tumbled into Finn’s head. She hadn’t backed down. She’d welcomed his kiss. She’d even quit her job, as he recalled, so she could kiss him. His traitorous body wasted no time reminding him that it’d been too long since he’d been with anyone.

But wants and needs aside, there were things to say. It had been strange, her reaction to the question about his writing. He planned to get to the bottom of things.

Pippa rested her head against the front door as Zoe and Bob walked down Finn’s driveway, their choruses of “Thank you!” trailing behind them.

“’Night!” Finn called.

Pippa righted herself and stepped down onto the front porch. Clearly, she planned to follow in Zoe and Bob’s footsteps. “Thank you so much for din—”

“Where do you think you’re going?” He took her hand, leading her back into the house.

Her eyes locked onto his, but not before she stifled a yawn. “I was going to go to bed.” Her face reddened. “I mean. Not with you, or anything. With myself. To sleep. To sleep by myself.” She slapped her palm against her forehead.

Christ, that had been awkward. Finn would have felt bad—if it weren’t damn funny. But right then wasn’t the time to focus on Pippa’s quirks. He needed to know what was going on in that head of hers. It would drive him barmy otherwise. “Come on, you. Those who don’t cook, clean up.”

“Okay.” Pippa walked down to the dining room and began clearing the table.

Finn positioned himself in front of the sink, dropped some of the pots he’d used to cook with into the bubbles, and then buried his arms elbow-deep in soapy water. Little swirls of steam drifted into the air from its depths as he tackled the pots and pans he’d left out on the counter.

A moment later, Pippa returned, setting a stack of cutlery on the counter nearest to Finn. He added this to the dishwasher while Pippa retrieved the plates. She returned and set to scraping the plates one by one, loading them into the dishwasher as she cleared them. Finn finished washing the pots and pans, resting each on a towel beside the sink.

He went through the motions of adding soap to the dishwasher, shutting the door, and pressing Start, but his mind wasn’t all there. Grabbing the towel, he took to drying some of the pots he’d washed, trying to figure out what he really wanted to ask her. It was tough getting to the heart of the matter if he didn’t know which questions to ask.
