Chapter Seventeen
SEAN OPENED THE DOOR to the cabin she'd been sharing with Caila for the past couple of days and smiled at the sight of Caila curled up on the small bunk, sleeping. She slipped into the cabin as quietly as possible and eased the hatch closed, locking it behind her. The space was tiny, which made getting out of her hardsuit without help a challenge, but she did her best to do so as quickly and as quietly as possible. It apparently wasn't quiet enough, however, because she was just starting to remove the codpiece when she felt a second pair of hands slide around her waist.
"Here, let me," Caila whispered.
Sean let her hands fall away as Caila started opening the latches. "I was trying not to wake you."
"I was trying to wait up for you." Caila didn't say anything else as she worked her way down Sean's legs, popping seals and pulling off hard plates. Once she was out of the hard shell, Sean turned around to face Caila and let her work open the seams and straps of the under-layer. Roaming hands, wandering lips, and teasing fingers turned the whole thing from a chore into a drawn-out and enjoyable pleasure, save the few moments it took to break the plumbing connections.
She took the time to fold and stow the under-layer alongside the rest of her gear, despite wishing she could just toss it aside and crawl into bed with Caila. Too many years of habit and too much awareness that their lives may yet come to depend on the hardsuit forced her to do it right. Once it was done, she turned her attention back to Caila with a smile, undressing her with the same care and attention that she'd received before pulling her down into bed.
Lips met, hands wandered, fingers found now familiar sensitive spots and wet entrances. It was slow and gentle, full of cries and moans, whispered promises and softly spoken words. When it was over, she held Caila so tightly she was half afraid she might hurt her, but she couldn't bring herself to let go.
She felt Caila's lips brush her ear.
"I love you,â Caila whispered.
She placed a light kiss on Caila's ear in return.
"I love you too."
"You promised me you'd explain."
Sean felt herself tense up. She'd known this moment was coming. She would have liked to ask herself what the hell she was thinking making a promise like that, but the truth was she knew. She simply couldn't take the idea that Caila doubted her.
"It's difficult," Sean said.
"You promised."
"I know, and I mean to keep it, but I've been keeping this secret for thirty years, love. It's not that I don't want to tell you, it's that it's hard even thinking about telling anyone."
Caila shifted in her arms so she could see her face.
"Thirty years? That would mean since right after you arrived at the Citadel."
Sean shook her head.
"Right after I got my implants. I didn't wake up from the implantation for nearly three days.
