SAN QUENTIN PRISON SCANDAL: CORRUPTION, VICE, AND OPIUM
It is now known that the prison is on the verge of the greatest opium scandal in history and that the discharge of guards Cramer and Brooks is simply the beginning of the investigation into the corruption and impropriety within the prison. More guards will follow, and it is believed that several will be implicated before the investigation is over.
Last Sunday, Warden McComb remained sequestered in his office, a stenographer taking testimonies from a dozen guards. The tip came from a convict named Miller, who assisted in the tower gate, and informed Gatekeeper Gillardin that Joseph Brooks and John Cramer were smuggling the drug into the prison. Gillardin saw Cramer walk down the wall between the tower gate and the jute mill and hand Brooks a package, which the latter lowered to a convict by means of a string. Gillardin waited until the convict was out of sight of the two guards, then made him give up the package. It contained half a pound of opium.
To one who has even a remote idea of the inside of Warden McCombâs methods of management, the only surprise is that periodical prison scandals are not more frequent. Though they come to the surface to torment him, he is a shrewd diplomat with more pulls than any other man in public life on this coast. He should have been kicked out years ago, but whenever a charge is placed against him, witnesses become dumb and men of influence arise to declare him immaculate. However, San Quentin will not be free from troubles, curses, and scandals so long as the present management remains.
The Warden is already under scrutiny due to an attack on the prison matron, Mrs. Mary Kane, which sent her to the hospital. Mary Von, who is serving a life sentence in San Quentin for the murder of George Bishop, attempted in June to murder the matron of the department for female prisoners. Mary Kane, the matron, had closed the female ward, locking the women inside, and was descending the stairway that leads to the washrooms when Mary Von, who had concealed herself there, assaulted her with an iron stove lifter.
Pushing the paper away, I feel sick to my stomach. Annie was not safe in that place. Without a responsible warden, something could go terribly wrong.
