This plate shows three ships of the Kuma class at different points of the war. Tama is shown in the top profile in its 1942 configuration. Note the camouflage scheme unique to her, the placement of the 5.5in guns, and the catapult aft. The middle profile is Kiso in its late-war 1944 configuration. The bottom profile is Kitakami in its torpedo-cruiser configuration. While the forward part of the ship remained basically unaltered, the placement of five starboard side Type 92 quadruple torpedo launchers can be readily seen.

Another difference was the incorporation of the new 24in torpedoes, which required larger torpedo tubes. Also, the main deck was extended aft so that it covered the aft set of torpedo tubes. There was no aft superstructure.
