Chapter 18

No one lived forever.

The thought repeated through her as she pressed the book Angus had given her against her chest. She had opened the book and realized it was a record of the Immortals. Their births, deaths, and marriages. But what had that to do with her parents? She could not shake the feeling that she would not like what she discovered and was surprised she wanted to delay it for a while longer.

She wrapped the thick wool cloak around her shoulders and headed outside. A blast of ice-laced air greeted her as she stepped into the night and walked toward the river. She remembered all the times Myra and Angus had told her stories of a fabled Immortal race. The tales had been so rich in detail that it had seemed the people and their adventures were real.

Now Isabel knew the legends were true.

Even knowing it was true did not change the fact that it was difficult to grab hold of the concept. These beings did not exist under the same laws governing other living things. She reached the shore and gazed out over the water. It was on a night such as this that William had appeared. The river was devoid of ripples, frozen solid. The moon was low over the horizon. It was the between time before the night relinquished the world to the day. Light brush strokes of purple and rose spread over the horizon, heralding the dawn, and a snow-filled breeze floated in the air.

Isabel shivered and pulled the cloak tighter around her. The cold air did not bring clarity to her thoughts as she had hoped. She should go back inside. It was growing colder. As she turned to leave, she heard a cracking sound.

Water bubbled through a fissure in the frozen water as lightning crackled overhead. In the next instant, a clap of thunder vibrated through the still night air. Isabel stared at the ever-widening circle of melting ice. It was as though an underwater fire burned just below the surface. Instinctively, Isabel backed toward the manor.

Water crashed over the dock. Wave after wave flowed over the weathered boards and down the sides. The river resembled the action of the ocean during an incoming tide. The water lapped against the pilings.

Bathed in the dawn’s light stood a woman.

Her waist-length hair spun around her in a silver pool. The garment she wore was a silken sheath, reflecting the shades of the ocean, from dark emerald-green to turquoise blue. The colors shifted with the breeze. The weather was brisk and cold, yet the woman stood on the dock as though it were the middle of summer. She was gazing into the shadowy depths of the river as though searching for answers.

Isabel clutched at her cloak but could not move. Time crept by on icy fingers.

The woman turned slowly to look in Isabel’s direction. A smile flickered over her lips. “Hello, Isabel. Please sit and talk with me a while.” Her greeting drifted over to Isabel as though on the breeze.
