The subject of science has always surpassed other subjects in the number of immersive technology experiences possible. The popularity of science experiences may be due to science lessons’ tendencies towards hands-on experiments and content, which become easy visuals to explore in immersive technology. AR/VR apps offer endless lab experiments, and finding the perfect classroom option is easier than most think.

The use of immersive dissection labs has grown in popularity for several reasons. Probably the most obvious reason for moving to AR/VR options is funding limitations. Schools are finding it ever more difficult to budget for dissection specimens. Another rationale for moving to AR/VR options is the demand for more humane approaches to research and learning. While the quality of the knowledge acquired by the real dissection versus the virtual dissection is debatable, I find the virtual experiences to be quite valuable for my students.

Some immersive science lab apps require high-end VR headsets, while others are possible on mobile devices. The key to a great virtual experience is deciding what important objectives you plan to cover and determining if your devices are compatible with the available apps. When using many VR headsets, the labs require the use of two remotes and place the experiments in a dynamic laboratory space. It’s often possible to have a virtual lab space with the instructor and students joining in the space at the same time. One platform that has been used for such experiences is Engage, a virtual meeting space used by schools, businesses, and others.
