Chapter Twenty-Four

“Okay Kailey, it’s time for school. It’s going to be fun I promise. Get dressed and come down for breakfast!” Michael yelled up the stairs, not wanting to make a seventh trip up that morning.

Kailey didn’t know how to tell them she was too scared to go to school. The last time she went to school, she had been taken away from her family forever. Her memories of her first family had started to blend with her current family, and it was getting harder and harder to remember her past life. She knew that she had loved them, but everything was fuzzy about that time in her life.

What if she went to school and lost Christy and Michael? She didn’t think she could lose them too. She decided it was safer to stay right where she was, under her bed in her room.

After a little while, Christy came through her bedroom door. She looked around not seeing Kailey until she spotted a foot being pulled under the bed.

“Where has my daughter gone?” She said, waiting for Kay to come out. Christy looked around the room, pretending like she had no idea where she was. She walked over to the closet and peered inside, “Kay, where are you?” she repeated.

She walked to the door and opened it to go into the hall and said over her shoulder, “I guess I will just have to take her school surprise back to the store.” She closed the door and walked down the stairs. It didn’t take Kailey more than two minutes to climb from underneath the bed and follow her mother.

When she came into the kitchen she saw Michael reading the paper with a cup of coffee steaming in front of him, and Christy pouring juice in her favorite cup. Kailey climbed up the barstool and sat with her legs dangling, swaying back and forth on the swivel bar stool. She kept her eyes down and said, “I’m sorry that I was hiding. I’m scared to go to school.” She did her best to keep her tears from overflowing.

This was not the response they were expecting. Michael put his paper down and came over to Kay with Christy right behind him. He picked her up from the stool and held her close, stroking her hair.

With his gentle touch, the dam burst, and Kailey cried as she hadn’t cried in a long time. She let out all the fear and anxiety that she had held in from the past eight months. Michael held her there, in the middle of the kitchen, as Christy paced the floor nervously with her arms crossed in front of her.

“I knew this was a mistake,” Christy said, looking over at him.

Michael handed Kay to Christy and pushed the hair to the side of her face and said, “I will be right back, don’t go hiding anywhere, okay?” Kailey gave him a watery nod. He smiled down at her and walked into his office. Christy sat with Kailey at the table that was filled with pancakes, sausage, and orange juice.
