Unconscious competence is mastery. You’ve been through the hard bit of learning and spent enough time practising to be able to do the task well. Now you can do it so well, in fact, you don’t even need to think about it. You are unconsciously competent.

You won’t reach unconscious competence on a training course. The key to reaching this stage is practice. If you really want to feature in the opening titles of a Miami Vice remake, you can expect to have to spend years in your powerboat learning how to handle it safely so you can look that cool. No effort faces are allowed in opening titles.

How to recognize when you’re in unconscious competence: Most people know unconscious competence the best from driving. If you have been driving a while, you’ve probably had the experience when you realize you have been driving for several minutes and you have practically no recollection what happened. You were so lost in your thoughts that you ate up the miles while they were outside your awareness. This is unconscious competence. You’re so competent at driving, sometimes you even find yourself doing it without thinking about it. Compare that to when you started driving!

Having the space to think about other things is the hallmark of unconscious competence. It’s why great footballers have ‘time on the ball’ – they don’t need to think about dribbling the ball or keeping possession, they have the space to focus on where the other players are and how to build a great move. It’s why expert musicians can explore their performance of a piece too – as they’ve already got the notes nailed and the dexterity to play them, they can get into what they’re trying to say.

In summary, here is what Burch is saying learning feels like, from start to finish:

This is brilliant – I love new things!

Yikes! This is harder than I thought!

This is terrible!

I am terrible!

Actually, I might be OK …

Yes! This is amazing. I am amazing!

Now, what was it I needed to buy at the supermarket later … ?

[OK, we made that last one up.]
