The Whitespace

Hudson walked up the white marble of the east stairwell in measured steps. He talked to himself under his breath. He walked.

“David,” he was saying, “I saw something in the basement, and I came to you first.” Hudson figured the best way to handle this situation was by going to his team captain. David’s job was to be on his side, right?

After four days sitting on this information, he needed to do something with it. David was smart, impartial, and invulnerable. None of the rest of them had transcended, as Gabriel called it.

Hudson walked down the halls of the administrative wing. He thought about how this was a place where they could learn how to survive. The gods they said they were—Hades, Zeus, Aphrodite, Athena, and the list goes on. The fact that they insisted on names like Rafi and Ezekiel worried him more. Were they the archangels or the gods, and if they were both, why not say so?

He remembered what Gabriel had said in class.

“Transcendence is the act of becoming a god. You become one with the spirit-god inside you. When you reach a state where you’re strong enough to control your powers and let them control you.”

Confused, Hudson had asked what happens, for example, to Aphrodite should Aiko transcend. She becomes the Acolyte of Love? Gabriel glanced at him, saying;

“Who said you were Greek?”

Hudson turned the handle on David’s door—habit by now due to his open-door policy—and walked into the room. The sounds of David and the woman he was with hit Hudson, along with the scene. David, nude, leaning over the woman on his desk. They were in the middle of the act.

“What the fuck?” David said.

“Sorry, sorry, sorry.” Hudson backed out the door. He closed the door. He realized who the woman on the desk was. Zavannah. Hudson ran down the hall and stairs and headed to the dorms.
