“One final question, Mrs. Martin. Our asylum laws are meant to benefit those persecuted by Peronism, not the persecutors. So Peronistas are barred from gaining political asylum.”

Diego’s mother nodded.

“Therefore, I am required by U.S. law to ask this of any Argentine citizen seeking asylum: Are you now, or have you ever been, a member of the Peronista Party?”

Heart suddenly thudding within him, Diego realized they could not get asylum. The card is not a good thing, Diego’s mother had told him that morning, and now he saw why. Would Hansen turn them over to the guards outside?

“No,” said his mother. “I never joined the Peronista Party.”

Out of the corner of his eye, Diego saw the verifier screen flash green.

Hansen stood up and reached out to shake Diego’s mother’s hand. “Welcome to the United States, Mrs. Martin.”
