Manic barking from the dogs, still in the outer paddock, and the sound of screeching tyres on the road outside broke the silence. Em bolted outside and looked down the hill to see a blue Ford Mustang speeding in reverse, smoke billowing around the tyres, then turning fast into her driveway.

Callum.

“Is that …” Kennedy stopped mid-sentence, watching from the doorway as the blue Mustang drove aggressively towards them. Em couldn’t think above the sound of the dogs, so she called over to hush them, but a car driving fast up the driveway, spitting gravel as it went, was good reason for them to be going off.

“Stay inside,” Em threw back at Kennedy. The last thing she needed was for Callum to see Kennedy Wright with her. She didn’t know if she and Kennedy were friends at this point, but she found herself wanting to protect whatever the relationship was, especially from Callum.

Em slowly walked down the steps as her ex-husband climbed out of the muscle car. He slammed the door behind him, looked around, then zeroed in on Em.

“What the fuck do you think you’re doing?” he screamed, striding towards her.

His dark blond hair was styled perfectly, the result of no less than an hour in front of the mirror, getting the kinks to sit just right. His eyelashes, permanently dyed a darker brown than his hair, outlined blue eyes that raged at her. He looked like the action heroes he liked to play. But Em knew her ex-husband – the wrinkled chambray shirt he wore and the equally rumpled grey t-shirt he had on underneath were tell-tale signs of just how livid he was. Normally the chambray shirt, his signature style, would be pressed perfectly, thanks to whatever assistant had been assigned to him. But not today.

She walked through the gate, but stayed close to it in case she needed something between her and Callum.

“I asked you a fucking question, Mathilda! What the fuck are you doing?” His voice was booming, and he was now standing so close she could see the red lines in his eyes, and his mouth quivering.

Em had no doubt that Margo and Shirley could hear every syllable all the way from their house. The dogs were relentless, making their anxiety known. When Callum reached out and wrapped his hand around her upper arm, his fingers digging in so hard she knew they would leave a mark, Charlie growled behind her. She yanked her arm away and stepped to the side.

“You need to stop this bullshit now! Pull that fucking video.” His voice was pure venom.

“It wasn’t me. The media are saying it was Mum, but it wasn’t her either.” Em asked. “Think about it, Callum. What would Mum gain by releasing it?”

His face went white. Then, in true Callum form, he laughed sarcastically. “We both know what her motives would be. To get back at me. She’s always hated me.” God, he was a narcissist. It was always about how the world felt about Callum Walsh.
