A mechanical (electrical) stemmer-crusher is ideal. It throws away the stems as it crushes the grapes and then drops the crushed grapes and juice into the container it sits on. There are a number of crushers on the market. Our favorite, the flywheel type, usually has a stainless-steel hopper and is about 48 inches (1.2 m) long. Fifty pounds (22.7 kg) of grapes can be crushed and stemmed in 1 or 2 minutes. For the winemaker making a lot of wine, a stemmer-crusher is a time-saving and efficient device. It is relatively expensive, so if you can borrow, rent, or buy one along with some friends, that’s even better.
