Think of flexible reading as shifting into different gears depending upon what is being read and for what purpose. Reading flexibly has advantages:

Flexible reading is more efficient. Students can accomplish more in the same amount of time.

Flexible reading supports reading comprehension. Slow readers do not comprehend as well as readers of similar ability who vary their rate. Slow readers do not interrelate information as well as flexible readers.

Flexible reading is directed. The focus is on what is most important.

Flexible reading aids memory. When students think about what is important in a text, they are more likely to retain it.

Flexible reading is the most feasible way to complete college reading assignments successfully.
