Homecoming

The car was packed, and Edward had fallen asleep on the couch. Jasmine came through the door at 6:03 pm, as she did every night at the exact time. She slipped off her shoes and let her bare feet sink into the soft carpet. She hung her keys delicately on the third hook from the left next to the door, as always, and walked over to the sofa where Edward was fast asleep. She leaned over and kissed his lips as she snuggled up next to him on the couch. Edward wrapped his arm around her and she rested her head on his chest with a comforting sigh.

“I missed you today,” she smiled.

“I missed you too, Jazz. How was work?”

“Oh, it was amazing. We’re ahead of schedule. Volunteers arrived today, from all over, to help prepare for our shipments.”

“From all over?” Edward asked curiously.

“Yes - well, the majority came from the coast to help, but we had volunteers coming in packs to our sites all over the country. It’s wonderful!”

“The Coast?!” Edward asked as he sat up quickly.

“Yes, baby. What’s wrong?”

He paused for a moment and thought about Piper’s recent video. He looked into Jasmine’s eyes. He loved her. He loved her so much and in her gaze the burning knot of fear that was growing in his stomach cooled to a warm relaxing flow. He kissed her, placing his hand gently on her cheek. “I love you,” he said without thinking. “I love you so much, Jasmine.”

Jasmine leaned in and kissed him again, and then slowly pulled back and smiled at him. She kissed his lips several times, pausing to look into his eyes.

“Let’s go away, Jazz. Right now.”

“Away?” she smiled. “Where would we go? There’s so much to do.” she started talking faster. “Supply timelines are moved up. Shipments are arriving tomorrow. We are starting Phase 3 as early as next week - we’re bringing The Link online! At this pace, we think we can start launching The Network into space by the end of the month.” She was smiling wide now, staring off at an imaginary point Edward could not visualize.

“Just for a couple of days, Jazz. I thought it would be nice for us to get away to the ocean. The car’s-”

“The Ocean?!!” For a moment her eyes glossed over and her face went blank. Then her mouth twisted as if she was trying to say two things at the same time. “I can’t right now. We are so busy and I have too much to do at work.” her voice was raised and she was speaking much faster now.

“Can’t you take off for a couple of days?”

“I can’t!” she shouted. “I said we have so much to do for The Link. We’re coming online soon!”

“We?” Edward responded.

“I just can’t, baby.” She took a deep breath and her face relaxed. “Baby, now just isn’t a good time for us - for me. But why don’t you go for a couple of days. Go to your ocean. It’ll be good for you.
