Fight The Power

The drive from Shrewsbury back up to Liverpool was uneventful, if you discount the screeching emitted by me and Nik when my dear departed aunt suddenly reappeared. We’d just got to the A55 junction between Wrexham and Chester, and I was carefully negotiating the confusing filter lanes when Kitty popped up in the rear view mirror without warning. “Jesus FUCKING christ will you stop doing that!” I howled, gripping the Alfa’s steering wheel in panic. Nik stared straight ahead in grim silence, but his jaw was clenched tight enough for me to see the muscles twitching in his neck.

“What a lovely evening,” Kitty said, gazing out of the window at the sunset and happily ignoring me. I glanced in the mirror and saw that not only did she have a smile on her to rival the Cheshire Cat, the flowers were back in her hair.

“Someone had fun, then,” I observed drily. “Made it up with Jonny, have you?”

“Might’ve,” said Kitty. “Haven’t decided yet. Ooh, we’re near Chester! I haven’t been there in years.”

“And we’re not going there now,” said Nik. “Dreadful place.” With that, he leaned back against the head rest and closed his eyes.

“So what’s going on with loverboy, then?” I asked Kitty. “Spill the tea, you terrible old woman.”

“Might I remind you I’m only three years older than you, Lilith O’Reilly,” she said. “So less of the old woman, thank you very much.”

“That’s a bit mad when you think about it,” I said. I glanced in the mirror in order to move lanes and saw she was fastening her seatbelt, which was a headfuck in and of itself. Presumably a ghost would just be able to teleport themselves out of any road accident, whatever the damage. That said, if Kitty really was becoming fully visible, then it was better if she did at least try to appear human. I wouldn’t like to have to explain my magically disappearing passenger to any random road cop who decided to stop me. “You’re my mum’s aunt, but she’s getting on for twice your age.”

“If you think that’s the strangest thing that’s happened round here recently,” said Kitty, “then you’re not very observant. If you don’t mind me saying.” She went back to staring beatifically out of the window and I just concentrated on getting us back to Liverpool in one piece.
