And just like that, I stood back by the shore at the lake. I even smelled the clear, crystal air, the slight scent of pine cones and lake water. I saw the eagle soaring over the highest tips of the pines, heard its shrill screech.

In minute detail, I saw the scratches on the well-worn mask hiding my captor's face. My mind slowly repeated her words to me, " Yeah, sure, I risked everything to rescue your ungrateful ass, just to shoot you down."

Her words were spoken in English and in utter incomprehension I watched her pull the black helmet mask off. Red hair tousled loose, darker than mine. I stared into a diamond-shaped face, similar to mine. But where my eyes are green like my mom's, her eyes were blue, like my father's. Our father? And still, I didn't understand.

My mind had erected an icy wall that refused to let the truth sink in.

"You have no idea who I am, do you?" she snarled.

I swallowed as tears bubbled up in my eyes, choked me. How could that be?

"Violet?" I asked in a quavering voice.

"Expendable type five, grade one, number 134,256,187,196,401. Kabballoth, to some," she said, staring me down. "And you are Vivian Manchester, Captain, beloved daughter of Charly and Beatrix Manchester."

"But… how?" I felt my chest swell, this woman wearing an Abbaddoth uniform was my sister. She had come to my rescue when no one else could. My little sister had come to save me.

I stepped forward, my arms rose to embrace her, my sister. Violet!

But she raised her gun at me, pointed it straight at my heart. "Stop right there."

"But…" I stopped, bereft of words.

"This is not a happy sibling reunion, you dimwit." Her eyes were cold, shooting daggers at me, and I saw her finger curl on the trigger. My heart hammered in overdrive. Was she going to shoot me? Here? Now? After she risked everything to rescue me?

"Why?"

"I wanted you to see me. I wanted you to tell our parents that I am still alive, despite them giving me up."

The icy hand that had made a grab for my heart squeezed it now, twisted it viciously as the truth slowly penetrated my mind. Yes, this was Violet, my little sister, but she hated me. She hated me with such fierceness, it poured from her eyes, echoed in the tone of her voice, in the way her finger twitched on the trigger.

She was the little sister my parents had been forced to give up. I was eight, and she two. I had loved her so much. I cried when they took her.

After the Abbaddoths came, things changed on Earth. Where before families had been too busy with their daily lives, too sidetracked with TV, computers, phones, tablets, and so on, suddenly family became everything again.

We spent more time together, depended on each other. My task, even at six, was to take care of my little sister. While my father worked, and my mom raised chickens and crops in the backyard.
