Chapter Twenty

That was unexpected. He hadn’t taken off his costume, so he decided he might as well head over and hear what Jane had to say. His mind raced with thoughts of why she’d summoned him. Maybe just to chew him out again. He didn’t blame her.

He texted back “Meet me on your roof.”

He tried out the new grappling rod, and found it was very easy to get around. Delightfully intuitive, he could easily reach rooftops without having to think about it. Ava was an impressive girl.

Jane was waiting in the moonlight when he got there, wearing casual clothes with a blanket draped around her shoulders to ward off the chilly fall air.

“New toy?” she asked.

“I told you, I’m doing everything I can to get ready.” He held up the grappling rod, showing it off.

“Come on, let’s go inside before I freeze my tits off.”

She went inside, down just one flight of stairs before reaching her apartment. She shoved him in, shutting the door quickly. The room had improved a lot in the short time since he last left it. She’d decorated and rearranged. Now the room felt relaxing and welcoming. Her books took center stage, filling a whole wall of shelves.

“What’s the rush?”

“A secret identity protects people you know, right?”

He nodded.

“Unless people know the Boxer is friends with me, then I’m not protected by the secret identity.”

Jack nodded. “You know, there really should be a class for this.”

“There is! You can get a whole degree in this.”

Jack blinked at her in surprise. “No shit?”

“I’m regretting not arresting you for unlicensed work that first time we met. If you get yourself killed I’m going to be so mad.” He withered under her fierce gaze.

“I would also be pretty mad,” he said, trying to ease the tension.

The tough officer eventually yielded. She offered him a drink.

“Water would be great,” Jack answered. “I think I heal faster than normal, but it dehydrates me something fierce.”

She handed him a cup filled from the tap, and he chugged it down. He regretted not taking his time with it, because as soon as he was done he knew Jane was about to drop the other hammer.

“Thanks,” he said.

She sat in one of the chairs. He wasn’t sure what was going on, so he sat down on the other chair, facing her.

“So…” Jack awkwardly led off with, after Jane had left him cooling his heels for a minute that felt like an hour.

“I’ve been thinking about what you said. About how you gain power.”

Jack gulped, his mouth suddenly dry again. Jane gritted her teeth, and then went on.

“I think it’s crazy, but I don’t think you’d lie to me about something so dumb. No, don’t say anything,” she said, cutting him off. “If you really think this will help you rescue your friend, I want to help. I… I probably was going to invite you over when you were better for something anyway. I was thinking maybe dinner and a movie first, something romantic. So, okay, I’m in.
