His evening ritual of sitting with his father-in-law the past few evenings played right into his hands.
This had been his best ruse yet. Why God decided to bless him with his good looks, he hadnât a clue, but it had helped him make a lot of money. Women loved a handsome man. Especially one with manners and genteel ways, but who could also handle the toughest of jobs.
Over the years, heâd perfected the scheme, using a number of aliases. All in some form or another related to his real name, but morphed into something new. That helped him keep them straight.
He hadnât planned on staying in Kalispell when he first came here. It was too small. Too remote. But after eight scam marriages, it seemed small and remote might work better. Especially since the last one had caused quite a stir.
Kimball had been making hot chocolate for Angus every evening after dinner for the past twenty years. So of course Harvey offered to bring it to the old man.
It thrilled Kate for her dad and husband to chat each evening.
If she only knew.
He walked back to Angusâs study, careful not to spill a drop from the mug, and tapped on the doorframe, then opened the door. âI brought you some hot chocolate.â
Angus sighed and leaned back in his great big leather chair. âMy favorite time of day.â He waved Harvey in. âHow are things going with the calving?â
âGood, good.â He took a seat across from the older man. âKate has it all under control. During the day, I handle most of the births. But she likes to be there at night.â
How should he go about bringing up the will again? The old man had hemmed and hawed over it for weeks now. Telling him and Kate on a regular basis that he was just going to change it. Mark didnât want the ranch anyway. âHow are you feeling? Any stronger?â
âLittle bit. Guess at my age itâs just going to take more time to recover from whatever that was. Today was a good day. But Iâm feeling awful tuckered out tonight. Thisââhe raised the mug to his lipsââshould do the trick.â
Harvey leaned back in the chair. Yes, as a matter of fact, it would. âGood, Iâm mighty glad to hear youâre feeling better.â
âI canât thank you enough for all youâve done around here, son. Youâd think threatening to disown Mark wouldâve knocked some sense into him, butââhe huffedââI should have known it wouldnât.â
Perfect. Olâ Angus brought up the will himself. Shouldnât be too difficult to find an amicable way to talk about it now. The sooner he got things squared away, the sooner he could wrap up Kalispell and put it behind him. âHeâs a smart one, that son of yours. But I know it breaks your heart to have him reject everything youâve worked to build.â
The old man nodded. âThe ranch is worth a small fortune after all these years. I wanted to leave that to my kids.â
âSir, you know that Kate will cherish it and take care of it.
