Chapter 9

Dana blinked a few times until realizing she was not in her own bed. She was stretched out on the couch with her head against someone’s lap. Shaking herself, she stirred then jumped straight up when she realized it was Eric.

He had been watching her and grinned. “I guess we slept together,” he joked.

She shook her head. “I am sorry. I hope you don’t think I intended for this to happen.”

“We were both exhausted. A late night swim in the lake really wasn’t on the agenda last night. I’m sorry I put you through it.”

“Coffee?”

“I’d love some.”

She made her way to the Keurig, pulled two cups out of the cabinet and turned to watch him struggle to get up. The wheel chair was beside the couch and he checked the brakes to make sure they were both on before attempting to get in the chair. He rolled himself over to the kitchen. “Let me help.”

“You can help by telling me what you like in your coffee.”

“Lots of cream and a teaspoon of sugar.”

She added them both and set the cup on a small tray. “We can sit on the front porch if you’d like. It’s my favorite spot to wake up.”

“Let’s do it,” he said, turning the wheelchair towards the door. “I’ll meet you there.”

She smiled. Eric was acting as if last night’s ordeal was an everyday occurrence. So far it didn’t seem to phase him physically. He didn’t look or act sick from almost drowning in the water. She brewed a second cup, checked in the pantry and found a pack of banana walnut muffins. She placed two on a plate and microwaved them for a few seconds then carried the plate outside where Eric had already made himself comfortable on the rocker. The wheelchair was shoved against the railing.

“Here we go,” she told him, offering him a cup then set the tray on the table between them. “Breakfast, Dana style.”

They both sipped on their morning coffee. “It’s beautiful here,” he told her. The sun had already risen, yet the morning air was still a bit chilly but not enough to need a jacket.

“I love sitting here every single morning before I get my day started. You can’t get a view like this in the city.”

“I’ve never taken the time to look to be honest. The city skyline is all I see out my work windows. And more buildings.”

“You obviously need this place as much as I do.”

He picked up his cup again and nodded. “You’re probably right. I know life is slow-moving here. It hasn’t hurt me but I’m getting restless. I want to walk on my own and get back to work.”

“How long have you been in that chair?”

“A few months, I’m not really sure.”

“Why aren’t you walking on your own, Eric?” She hated to ask but felt like he needed to answer the question more for himself than her. Why was she able to read him so clearly?

He turned to her. “I’m pretty sure it’s more of a mental block than anything else.
