Chapter 7
I FELT RATHER FATIGUED. It wasnât too bad, but still, I didn't like it.
Iâd had to put a lot of my energy into the last sortie, but at least weâd cleared the village with no losses of our own. Yes, some of my men were wounded, but this didnât cost me much. Most of my energy expenditures were on treating myself. After all, when a detachment of mercenaries armed to the teeth is on your tail, you don't count the costs. I spent resources on reinforcing my muscles, and others on further hardening my skin. I would have liked to devote more to these two areas, but I also had to deal with some damage here and there simply from the heavy demands I'd had to make on my body. Unless a body is developed, it simply cannot handle excessive quantities of energy poured into it. Over time, muscles and ligaments begin to tear, joints lose their flexibility, and tendons stretch, and are thinner. Thus, this all requires maintenance. But in this recent foray, Iâd only taken a couple of hits, with no damage to critical organs.
As we drove back to the castle, everyone was sunk in their own thoughts. I was, overall, happy about the trophies weâd scored on our outing. The men, meanwhile, were pleased that weâd come across some nice food supplies. They were all happily exclaiming over it as they loaded the huge boxes of provisions into our trucks ââ our newly acquired trucks, of course.
Victoria was also smiling. I think what made her heart sing were all the corpses we loaded into one of the trucks. It was full of them, and I gave her carte blanche to do whatever she wanted with the dead mercenaries. I didn't expect that sheâd ever have to worry about running out of them. What she needed to train her Gift showed up right at her doorstep with enviable regularity.
In fact, I thought it was odd that the mercenaries hadn't yet blocked the road to the castle. That's what Iâd do. Iâd simply cut the castle off from the outside world. Then, theyâd just wait for our supplies to run out. Of course, now we were unloading two big trucks stuffed with provisions for the castle. And yet another was still heading this way. We could actually hole up for quite awhile.
Although, yes, I do believe Iâd read somewhere that the roads all belonged to the Empire, and so the Emperor had forbidden anyone from messing with them. They all had to be kept open. No doubt the mercenaries had no desire to provoke the wrath of the Empire, although this law was, apparently, a rather new one. It was instituted after an incident in which hostilities between two Families resulted in a road blockage that extended over several hours. It so happened that this occurred when a powerful healing artifact was being transported to the heir to the throne, who was in dire need of it. Every since then, anyone who messed with the roads was swiftly and severely punished.
