Vaun returned and crept into bed beside her.

Athadia lay motionless, as she had since he’d left her a few hours before. She hadn’t bothered dressing to confront Fedor since she wasn’t about to break her vow and club him. The fact was, she didn’t wish to part on bad terms with Vaun either. She would escape, but not tonight. Soon, she promised herself. After he was gone.

Sliding her hand across, she found his wrist, let her energy pour into him.

With a groan of relief, he rolled and pulled her against him, settling each of her curves into the planes and shallow valleys of his form. “I am forgiven?” he asked.

“Oh, Vaun,” she murmured. She ought to be angry, but she understood his loyalty to his Kerf people. It was much like her own to Alvians. And he was Alvian. Alvians didn’t hold grudges against one another. They were too interdependent.

Rubbing her face against the fine hairs that sat like wind-flattened grass across his chest, she embraced his energy with hers and knew the real reason she could not hold onto anger. She combed his body for imperfections in his health and brought him to the peak of vigor and heartiness.

He woke at the first sound of armed men in the lane.

“You haven’t slept?” he asked after a long study of her face in the pale light.

She shook her head.

“Take better care of yourself while I’m gone, Blossom.” He kissed her nose then set her away to climb from the bed.

The disentangling of their energy burned like a scab scraped back from a wound. She knew he also experienced the sensation. It was common after deep healing.

“I haven’t felt that since you first slept with me, out in the wilds,” he said, rubbing his chest. “What is it?”

“My energy wishes to stay joined with yours. I’m being selfish,” she said as she sat up. It was true and she knew it would please him to hear it.

His lips stretched in a satisfied smile. Coming back to the bed, he stroked his knuckles up her neck to beneath her jaw, holding her head tilted for another kiss, a proper one, that he leaned down to linger over, sweet and tender.

She wondered if she should admit it wasn’t solely for her own indulgence that she wished to stay in his arms. Supported by his energy, she had guided the spark of life inside her to a safe nesting place. It
