The subject matter I’m shooting sets my initial goal. For example, when I shoot airplanes, I shoot with the expectation that they’ll be more illustrative, and process the pictures in that style. As I work through the images, I may then rework them and process another version more painterly.

A good example of this is my friend’s amphibious plane. It is painted with a vibrant Margaritaville-ish motif, and was sitting in a texturally rich hangar with wood grain and cement blocks. It screamed HDR! I shot wanting to capture the textures and detail, definitely thinking illustrative. Then, I revisited the images, and I totally love a painterly version I did. I guess one complements the physical plane and the other complements the euphoric feeling the plane brings to the pilot.

Q. What kinds of experimentation do you find yourself doing now with the HDR?

I do a lot of post-processing. The right processing can bring out the brilliance of oxidized paint on a plane, or go the other way and capitalize on the textures of the aging surface. Products made by Topaz and Nik are my go-to post-processing tools, and allow me to creatively mix it up and create an endless array of styles. I’m also having a lot of fun with overlays and edges, like Flypaper Textures and onOne products.

Q. Where can we find out more about you?
