Not until the photographer emails me the proofs of the final photos does it dawn on me: Oh, shit. Rob’s going to see this. Bobby’s going to see this. Mom is going to see this. How naive could I possibly be that I didn’t think of that?!

I spend the next few weeks worrying, but I don’t have that much time to focus on it. The Games are around the corner.

The World Cup in Serbia in May 2012 is the first race I tell Mom I want her to come to. Now that Rob and I are on the national team, there’s finally some funding to pay our way. So, for once, I don’t have to lean on Mom for financial help, and she can use that money to come herself.

“Wait. It’s in Siberia?” she says over the phone.

“No, Mom. Serbia.”

“Oh,” she says, as if that makes more sense.

“Rob’s dad and stepmom are going, too, so you’ll have people to hang out with.”

“I don’t care who I hang out with, honey, I’d come alone. I’m just excited to see you race.”

I close my eyes. Don’t let her down.
