Chapter 8

After making a quick call to Helen’s house to make sure she didn’t need anything—and audibly sighing with relief when Levi didn’t answer the phone—Robyn waited for Brooke to emerge from the coffee shop and together they set off toward the library.

“How do you know Owen’s going to be there?” Robyn asked as they headed away from the island’s main square toward a treelined path that overlooked the shimmering water. Both sides of the path were lined with plants blooming with colorful flowers and tall grass that brushed against their legs as they walked.

“Because he’s always there,” Brooke said, stepping aside so a young family carrying beach towels and folding chairs could pass by them. “When he’s not teaching, he’s holed up at the library, reading through as many books as he can. It's been that way ever since…” Her voice trailed off as she seemed to reconsider what she was saying. “Well, for a long time.”

Robyn eyed her, but asked no further questions. The last thing she wanted to do was come off as a busybody—in a community as small as Thistle Island, that would likely earn her a reputation that wouldn’t endear her to anyone. She and Brooke chatted as they walked, and Robyn learned that the willowy redhead with the striking green eyes had been born and raised on the island, leaving only for a few years to earn a college degree in business and marketing and then returning to learn the ropes in various cafés and restaurants before opening up The Coral Café ten years ago. She seemed to know everyone and everything about Thistle Island, and regaled Robyn with stories of several residents she had yet to meet.

“So… Levi,” Robyn said tentatively, unsure why she was bringing up Helen’s nephew but feeling compelled to learned more about him. “He seems a little… angry.”

Brooke sighed and shook her head sadly. “He is, and in all fairness, he has every right to be. He and Sara were childhood sweethearts—you never saw one without the other. They were married right out of high school. I was one of her bridesmaids, and it was a beautiful day, filled with the kind of love and joy every girl dreams about for her wedding. The look in Levi’s eyes when she walked down the aisle toward him…” Brooke’s voice caught, and she cleared her throat. “Well, I’ll never forget it.”

A heaviness settled over Robyn’s chest as Brooke spoke, though whether out of sadness for Levi and Sara, or the loss of her own dreams of marriage and happily ever after, she couldn’t say. “So what happened to her?” she asked, wondering if she had been too quick to judge Levi for his unapproachable nature. “Sara, I mean.”

“She died the day after Delaney was born,” Brooke said softly, a faraway look in her eyes as she stopped walking and gazed out over the water far below them. Robyn joined her, and together they watched a young couple on the beach who were dipping their baby’s toes in and out of the waves, laughing as she squealed with delight.
