Bye, Bye Black Sheep

Newport

Kathy returned to Melinda’s house late Wednesday afternoon to report on events. Brigadier Hamilton had intervened successfully, in part. Sir Rupert, the senior permanent secretary of the Department of the Army, and a couple of his aides arrived unannounced at JBWK about nine in the morning. An hour later a vice admiral up from New York, a bunch of Navy Investigative Services types, and a couple of very fit field-grade-officer-type marines in utterly nonregulation sunglasses swept onto the base.

Kathy said that Blythe-Jones’s office turned a bloodstained knife over to the navy folks. Kathy overheard one of the admin sergeants in the JAG office say that the dead body lying at the coroner’s office in Providence had been confiscated jointly by the navy and the RFC Constabulary out of New York.

Kathy was still outraged. “Those morons are still planning to go ahead with a trial. They intend to rely on photographic evidence and the testimony of the arresting MPs. At least I managed to get one of the officers replaced with a senior noncom. A command sergeant major, whatever that is. I asked Tiny about him. Tiny said he was a decent guy, at least as much as a skull-crushing Neanderthal can be.”

I was at Melinda’s little cottage on Monday, just after lunch on the afternoon of the first day of the court-martial, waiting to hear how things went. The phone rang. One of the household servitors answered the phone and then spoke privately to Melinda. Melinda talked on the phone for a moment or two, then turned to me and said, “It’s a call from Cousin Tiny. He seems eager to talk to you.”

“Okay, jarhead,” said Tiny, once I got to the phone, “you somehow did good. Cousin Kathy is now a fracking national hero among army noncoms. I got the word from the first cousin of the lady legal clerk that was doing the transcriptions of the proceedings. She called her cousin, who used to be with me at Ft. Arnold, and he called me.

“The court was called to order at ten, the Honorable Brigadier Ffellows presiding. Administrative stuff took about fifteen minutes, names read into the record, charges, crap like that. Prosecutor starts his opening statement and says they will prove method, motive, and opportunity. First thing they tried to do was introduce a picture of the bloody knife into the record. Kathy objected and was overruled.

“Kathy then asked for a ten-minute recess in order to discuss with her client whether he would like to throw himself on the mercy of the court and thus spare the court any additional effort. The clerk typist said Mutton’s eyes just glazed over at that point, and his face hit the desk. That request for recess was granted. Nine and a half minutes later the beady-eyed old vulturess herself walks into the courtroom as it was about to get back into session.

“Judge reconvenes the court. Kathy states, ‘My client wishes to continue his defense. I ask the court to reread the last several sentences from before the adjournment.
