Suicide Attacks

E ric and Kyle were chatting with the defectors, waiting for Jason to get back. The conversation was light, both sides gaining more confidence with each other.

“What are you going to do when this war is over?” Ben asked.

Eric chuckled. “I’d actually like to go back to Florida, believe it or not.”

“You’re from Florida?” Ahmed asked.

“No, I’m originally from Texas, but I worked in Florida. I had a good life down there. Miss the ocean.”

“You have the gulf coast here,” Ben said. “It’s beautiful, from what I saw.”

“It is, but I like the Atlantic better,” Eric said. “I’ve got a woman now. She was living in Florida, but I’m not sure she wants to go back there. She might want to stay here instead.”

Kyle snickered. “Yeah, we know who the boss is.”

“You will stay in Texas, Kyle?” Ahmed asked.

“Yeah, I’ve still got a job here, on Austin PD, although I’d love to take about five years off.”

All of the men chuckled, and then both Kyle and Eric got buzzed by their phones.

“Crap, short-range app,” Eric whispered, looking towards the door. “Now I wish there were some windows in here.”

“They’re coming for us,” Ben said.

“Don’t worry, I only see eight hits,” Kyle said. “They came in a lead-lined van, ten to one.”

“There are a lot of armed people out there who also just got buzzed,” Eric said.

Gunfire sounded from in front of the building.

“Here they come,” Hassan said.

“Don’t worry,” Eric said, “they’ve got to get through us and a whole lot of other people to get to you.”

More gunfire erupted, mostly from AK-47s, and then the loud rapid fire of M60s started up.

“I don’t like that sound,” Ben whispered. “Maybe I like it right now, though.”

“Yeah, that’s our guys. M60s sound different.”

The battle intensified, Kyle and Eric watching their phones as the RFID hits moved frantically from one place to another.

“They’re crazy,” Kyle said. “They don’t know where these guys are, and they just picked a fight with nearly a hundred thousand armed Texans.”

“They’ll have bomb vests on,” Ben said. “If they get close enough, they’ll take us out.”

“They’re running back towards the gate,” Eric said, watching his phone. There was an explosion outside, rocking the building, debris raining down on the roof.

“Half of the RFID hits just disappeared. They weren’t all wired, were they?”

Jason burst into the room, closing the door behind himself. “You guys okay?”

“Not a scratch,” Kyle said. “What happened?”

“Must be one of their last shielded vans,” Jason said. “Everybody got buzzed. They never had a chance.”

“Don’t let anybody get near the van unless they know explosives,” Hassan said. “It might have a much larger bomb. How close is it to this building?”

“Fifty meters or so,” Jason said, getting ready to send a broadcast text. “I’ll warn everybo…”

There was a massive explosion, this one destroying part of the wall and roof, knocking everybody to the floor, parts of vehicles and bodies raining down around them.

“Everybody okay?” Kyle shouted.

“I’m hit in the foot,” Jason said. “I think Ben bought it.
