Chapter 17

In the town, we crept forward, cautious to avoid attracting attention, or being seen by either one of the curators. Small buildings rose up on either side of the street, cars parked on its edges.

“Steady, everyone,” said George.

John said, "There’s his car. Melon. Go look and see if that box is in there."

I said, "Won’t be. He’s carrying it with him."

Paul assured, "Just look. I’ll be your lookout."

I didn’t want to go, and it felt as if George pushed me out into the roadway. I walked across to the little store, head down.

To my surprise Ringo came up alongside me. I said, "Oh! You’ll be recognized."

Ringo said, "Not a chance. They always forget the drummer. Besides, he’s right there." He handed me a newspaper and held another up to his face, peering over the top periodically at where Dr. Vasilopoulos was in the shop doing business. I did the same, figuring that my own nondescript face would protect me.

Dr. Vasilopoulos finished his business and emerged with the box and got back into his car. Ringo and I watched as he drove down the village street and then parked again. Ringo said, "He’s not taking any chances."

We all walked on opposite sides of the street, three Beatles, John, Paul, and George, on one side, and Ringo, and I on the other, to see that Dr. Vasilopoulos had gone into another shop. I walked up to his car, careful for any passing traffic, and peered in the car’s window, keeping one eye out for Dr. Vasilopoulos.

The box was in there.

Right there, close enough to touch. I lifted the handle but the door was locked, not budging.

Dr. Vasilopoulos turned inside the store, facing me through the large front window, alarm rising on his face. He burst out the shop’s door shouting, "Hey! Get away from there!"

Ringo stepped up, blocking the Dr. from me, "We need a ride. We need a ride, Doctor! We’re so lucky to have found you.” He pointed at me, “Emergency here. Need medical people. Help us!"

Dr. V looked at us warily, "What are you doing here?"

I said, "Uh…looking for houses. But I’m, uh, I’m ill."

Ringo nodded, "She’s so ill, that’s for certain. Which way to hospital?"

The Dr. narrowed his eyes, looking at me closely, "You do look sick."

I beg your pardon!

"She is. Certainly. Look at that face! Awful!"

I coughed into my hand a few times.

Dr. V said, shrugging, suspicious, motioning with a thumb, "Ride in back. Cough the other way out the window."

I watched as he unlocked his door, getting situated behind the steering wheel, then he leaned over the seat, putting a hand on the box in the passenger seat, unlocking the back door with a flick of his finger.

I grasped the warm metal handle and opened the door. I looked at Ringo who leaned down, "I’ll meet up with the others, Doctor."

He was leaving me? What was with them?

Suddenly I lost my wits, and my composure, leaning over the seat and lifting the box, grabbing it into my arms, and stumbled out onto the roadside, turning to run.
