Some label her a terrorist on par with Osama bin Laden, while others claim that she is the hero that America needs. We are, of course, talking about the charismatic former college professor Riona Finley.

While the government is aggressively trying to hunt her down, millions say they admire how she is challenging a political system that has grown too corrupt and inept to deal with the nation’s problems. Her rise as a public figure and influencer is causing major rifts in American society, pushing people into pro- and anti-Finley camps.

In many ways she has become the symbol of a fractured America. She dominates the 24/7 news cycle and drives network ratings. Indeed, a recent raid on an abandoned mine in Virginia had all the elements of a Hollywood film, with the FBI successfully rescuing the prestigious scientist Bill Eastman, and Finley making a last-minute escape amidst a flurry of explosions.

Within hours, Finley was capitalizing on the drama on social media: “Thanks for all the warm wishes. It was a close call, but the FBI and all the police in the country won’t be enough to stop us. Our important work continues. We will never give up!”

Finley’s continued success at eluding the authorities and her ability to rally supporters has the current administration worried.

In an unprecedented move, President Shaw issued an executive order declaring the New Anarchists a terrorist organization. Within hours of the decree, hundreds of Finley’s supporters had been arrested. But the move has put the administration on shaky legal footing, as many of those arrested have only a tenuous relationship to Finley. Many made donations to her climate fund, and others merely follow her on social media. Indeed, a list of supporters released by the FBI showed dozens of prominent Hollywood actors, musicians, and politicians, many of whom have spoken out against the terrorist designation.

What the administration hoped would be a step toward snuffing out her movement, seems to have only fanned the flames. Working with other environmental groups like Sierra Club and the Nature Conservancy, Finley announced that her supporters would march on Washington, effectively taunting the government to arrest them all.

“Mark your calendars and plan your road trip! February 16 is the Mega-Climate Rally in Washington DC. We want two million supporters to fill the National Mall and show the government that we are too big to ignore! #MegaClimateMarch2027.”

Bud Brown folded the newspaper and tossed it on the desk. He absently touched the bandages on his head from where he’d been burned. The skin still felt hot to him.

Since the raid and Brightwell’s death, things had gone from bad to worse. Finley was nowhere to be found, and Bud felt like he was starting all over again. He was a mental wreck too.

He realized he’d made several critical mistakes. The first was that he had not killed Coyle when he had the chance.
