Chapter 24

Sean

By the time I enter my sister’s small suite, it’s getting close to two. The room is dark, so I flip on the bathroom light so I can determine which bed is mine. After I get my stuff put away, I change quickly and crawl into the bed closest to the window.

Right as I am about to close my eyes, the lamp in between the beds flips on. Tara sits up and stares at me, with this look that communicates I am about to get an earful. “Do you know what time it is?”

I prop the other pillow under my head and get comfortable. “Yes, Mom I do.”

If you don’t have sisters, then you don’t understand that reference like you really should. I believe ever man should have to experience having at least one sister. That way he will always have someone to boss him around, to remind him that no matter how old he is, he’s still just a dumb adolescent male.

And God double blessed me, by placing me smack in the middle of both of mine.

Becca is the boss of us all, even Nathan. She was the one who always made us feel bad when we did stupid stuff. She was also the one we ran to when we needed advice, the kind of advice we may not necessary want to hear.

Tara is the sensible one. She was the one who called us out on our shit, but never judge us. The one we took with us when we wanted to have fun, but needed her to keep us out of trouble. The one who wouldn’t rat us out, but tell our girlfriends off when she thought they were getting to clingy.

Both of my sisters were essential for my brothers and myself, surviving our childhood without doing some of the dumb things our friends did.

“If I was your mother, I’d take your phone, confiscate your car keys and ban you from seeing the girl who kept you out this late.” Tara tosses her hair over her shoulder. “So be thankful I’m not your mom. This isn’t typical Sean behavior.”

“I know that too.” And yes, I understand my short to the point answers are driving her crazy.

Tara grabs the pillow next to her and whacks me with it. “I like her Sean. Don’t make me not like her, because I think she is making you break that vow of yours.”

“It’s not like that, Tara. Emily isn’t like that, plus I would never allow her to break her own vow.” And I watch my sister signal her approval. “And don’t lecture me about breaking vows.”

Tara grins really big. “We were really drunk. It wasn’t like we planned on any of that happening. He was afraid to leave me in the guestroom alone in case I got sick, so he forced me up the second flight of stairs to his bedroom on the third floor. I’d never been in his bedroom until then, and I was a little overwhelmed. I was so out of it I couldn’t even get my own clothes off.
