CHAPTER VII

After dinner was over the Amazon led the way from her bungalow to a long, low-roofed building perhaps quarter of a mile away down the main street of her marvellous little town. Once inside the place the party realised that its size was deceptive. Within it was huge, and equipped with all manner of highly complicated scientific instruments and electrical apparatus.

“I call this my Brain Room,” the girl explained, waving a hand to the equipment. “With these instruments I can keep in touch with the outer world. Some of them are well known to everyday science, but others are my own especial secret. It took me about two years to manufacture all this apparatus with machine tools and the natural yieldings of this richly fertile land … Now, this is my Television Machine,” she went on, resting her hand on a wide screen of ground glass fitted into a copper frame, while behind it reared a mass of tubes, wires, valves, and transformers.

“Television,” remarked Sir Bradley Jessop, “is an everyday accomplishment.”

The girl turned to him, coolly disdainful.

“This, Sir Bradley, is not an everyday accomplishment! It is probably the finest conception I ever had! Normal television needs a transmitter at the sending end: this does not. All I need to do is learn from an outer-world agent — who will be using a pocket instrument — what the exact latitude and longitude of a certain position is, then I train this instrument directly on that position from this chart here … ”

The party looked at the wall where a gigantic world map was relief-projected and criss-crossed with latitude and longitude lines.

“Adjustment gives me pin-point selection,” the girl resumed, switching on a series of droning generators. “Light waves are always being transmitted by any visible object, of course. This instrument sends out a beam in the form of an X-ray which goes right through solids, thereby overcoming horizon curvature. When it is centred on the spot required magnetic impulses draw the light photons back along the beam to the transformers here. They convert the light photons into the original image.”

“That,” said Chris Wilson admiringly, “is definitely pure television, the technique our scientists are still trying to perfect. But look, Vi, don’t you get a leaning over backwards effect from objects at a great distance? Surely you must, since your beam goes right through the earth and doesn’t strike a distant object square on … ”

“For that I use mirror-compensators,” the girl replied, obviously happy to wrestle with the scientific issues. “Just as a lens projects an image upside down, so a secondary lens rights it again. Anyway, look here … ”

She clicked a switch and the ground glass screen suddenly suffused with colour. Bars of black traced across it and then faded to leave a clear-cut colour image of a room.
