There was a crowd gathered around the old, worn down church. The church stood tall and proud, with intricate designs showcasing the careful craftsmanship of its builders. However, the paint on the walls and decor has faded long ago. Wild grass and ivy covered the entire base of the building. The great doors were cracked and could not close properly. If one didn't know better, one would think that this was a church that has been abandoned for decades, if not centuries.
A man stood at the entrance of the church. He was only in his mid-forties, but the wrinkles on his face and his head, balding, with only strands of silvery white hair on the back made him look a lot older. His clothes were simple and worn down, giving a different signal from the high class, aristocratic aura he gave off.
A group of children gathered around the man. The children held onto his outstretched hands. One could see a sadness in their eyes, but also a faint ray of hope. Behind the children were a group of women. Mothers of the children looked on, with the same sadness in their eyes.
Even the elderly who had trouble walking showed up. Today was their last chance, their last hope.
“Please come back safely, Father Rogelio!”
The children looked up to the man, grabbing his hands tightly with their tiny hands. Father Rogelio reached out and patted the children on their heads one by one.
“Don't worry, I will definitely return with help. Just wait!”
The children slowly let go of Father Rogelio's hands, and moved out of the way. The women thanked the Father for all he has done, and also wished for his safety. The Father bid farewell to the elders, and left for his journey. The whole village watched quietly, as the silhouette of the Father slowly faded away in the horizon.
Estia Village was originally a flourishing village that attracted a lot of young families looking to find their own place in the world. The village was a “gateway” to the capital of the Al-Azruth Empire, Kal-Bhatar. As such, it became a place for traders and adventurers to gather and rest, before continuing on to the capital city. In the past, Estia had a flourishing market of its own, and a vibrant entertainment industry. Merchants and adventurers who made a lot of money would come and celebrate their success before going on their next adventure.
At one point, people thought that Estia was going to become a large, thriving city rivalling or even surpassing that of Kal-Bhatar. Huge amounts of investments flew into the village from wealthy investors. An impressive church, with intricate designs not even seen in buildings in the capital was built in the center of the village.
Unfortunately, things did not play out the way people had hoped. Several generations ago, a particularly corrupt and incompetent emperor came to rule the Al-Azruth Empire. What was once the strongest and wealthiest human nation quickly fell and lost power. The subsequent
