“Was this your goal all along?” Ares asked. “Do you just want to piss people off one last time?”

Ares had been in the room when the weird-looking alien told not only Earth’s consuls but every other empire’s leader that she was requesting two large contingents of Earth’s army be placed under Primordial control. She then explained if that happened, she’d grant complete and total power to Pro. She threw in that she’d be serving under his command as well.

Calling what happened next chaotic wouldn’t be inaccurate. Ares had watched all the arguments, the screaming, and the various empires’ leaders shutting off their holovids, only to come back a few minutes later.

Ares had known something was off when Obs and Pro didn’t return at the end of the break. The two were absent, and the meeting was too important to wait for them. It turned out that statement wasn’t accurate since most of the meeting was about at least one of them.

The Primordial hadn’t demanded anything. She’d asked for it, and while humanity could have denied her what she wanted, everyone understood that would be foolish.

The meeting had ended, and Ares had done two things: asked Jeeves where Prometheus was and then gone to him.

Prometheus looked up from his Whip. He was outside the residence, staring at the weapon. Obs was lying on the grass a few meters away. “They gave me the men?”

“Yes, they did. What else were they going to do?” Ares approached the bench and came to a stop. “An alien wanted you and the divisions, so she got them, but no one is happy about it. I’m not sure anyone’s going to say anything directly to ya because there isn’t time. They probably wouldn’t have much to say except curse words, but I’d like to know why. It’s one thing to go fight. It’s another to pull needed men away from a military campaign and hook them into your plans without any oversight.

“Gods, saying it aloud makes me wonder why in hades they agreed to it. So, why?”

Pro dropped his eyes back to the weapon. “I guess I didn’t really think they’d do it either, even with the alien asking.” He turned the hilt over and over in his hands. “I didn’t ask for it, Ares. She didn’t tell you that?”

The words Ares was going to say were suddenly unimportant. “She didn’t give us much of her reasoning. There isn’t time for anything. You didn’t tell her you wanted it?”

“Hades, no.” Pro leaned back on the bench. He kept twirling the Whip but finally looked at Ares. “They gave me Thaddeus, two divisions, and complete control?”

“That’s right.”

Prometheus’ eyes widened, and he glanced down at the pavement, nodding. “Well, I didn’t see that coming.” Another moment passed, then he stood up. Obs rose from the grass, and the two walked past Ares and headed down the stone walkway he’d come down.

“What are you doing?” Ares called after them.

Prometheus didn’t look over his shoulder, but he spoke louder so he could be heard.
