Part two

Twenty-four

Moving light against his eyelids woke him. He slowly opened his eyes. It wasn’t daylight; it was the kind that came from lanterns. The movement continued and the cotton-wool slowly cleared from his brain. He realised how uncomfortable he was, but there was no relief from any position he tried. The least worst was sitting with his back in a corner of the crate resting on his bound arms.

The hole he’d kicked in the side had a plank of new wood covering it. He didn’t want to be drugged again so he kept quiet. Clara’s kitten was watching him and kept quiet as well.

Clara was asleep. He thought about their situation for the moment and realised that was probably a sensible thing to do - there was no chance of getting out and away at the present time.

He took a deep breath, closed his eyes, and tried his normal technique of mentally designing a new mechanical device and working out all the connections it required – he didn’t believe he’d be able to get another C-box to use.

Unfortunately all he could think about was what had happened to them. He realised it was all to do with his sister. He knew she had this thing with animals but for what possible purpose was Olivia after her? The man that noticed what Clara was doing at his father’s club must have told someone and sparked their interest because it was only after that all of this started.

He almost jerked as a memory hit him. The butterfly! The butterfly must have somehow told them more about what they wanted to know. He looked at the one sharing their crate. Its eyes were now only showing the faintest light. Its energy was getting low now and the sound of its internal whirring was slowing down.

Unrecognisable cries came from outside. He wondered what was happening and remembered he couldn’t see as they were in amongst a load of crates. There was another bump and the movement stopped. He heard the sound of idling steam carriages and the sound of crates scraping against each other. The cries he was hearing were because the crates were being moved. Was their one going to be moved? He shuffled around and leant his forehead against the crate so he could look through one of the slits between slats. The crate that was blocking the view earlier was still there but it gave a kind of shiver and it was lifted out of the way. The dockside was lit by only a few lanterns, barely enough to see by. Whatever was going on wasn’t meant to be seen. In the meagre light he could see four steam trucks being loaded with crates.

He recognised some of the men from the warehouse he and Clara had hid in. What were the weapons going to be used for?

The activity ceased and the backs of the trucks were swung back up and bolted shut. There was another cry and they moved slowly away from the dockside into the darkness.
