The dog, responding to the whistles from his master, duly appears, in the company of others—semi-wild, the MacAnaspie pariah pack he’s hanging round with—and the party, famished and exhausted, extinguishes the fire and having stumbled through the bush, after Fats, for an hour or so, dosses down, by 8 p.m. at the latest, in the cave, where the glow-worms create a glow like that from a jewellery shop in the mall during a blackout. By 8.10 p.m., were the glow from the glow-worms sufficiently bright, which thankfully it’s not, Paula Zoshka and Brian Chegwodden could be seen doing that which they had promised not to, before they were married. Eugene Ecks, meantime, who reasons he should have sex, though doesn’t really feel up to it, is mauling Diane Zoshka, with a similar end, presumably, in view. But she won’t let him put his hands on her buns, or even her boobs. Nisi Papadimitriou and Balthazar Beauregard get caught up in the general, orgiastic vibration. Balthazar can now add the scalp of this former Miss Western Districts Charity Queen to his impressive tally. Certainly, the cave would have a cattleman jumping off his horse, thinking he’d found a cow who just calved: it sounds like an afterbirth being eaten. And it’s all too much for Michael Ginnsy, because, when the others wake in the morning, he has gone, and taken the dogs with him.
