CHAPTER 16

THE QUEEN OF THE MOUNTAIN

"I'm not coming out of the woods," I said to the camera. "I know what happens in clearings."

The sun vanished as dark clouds engulfed the sky.

She laughed. "They said you were a smart one. You have my word. No one will shoot you."

"Or knife me. Or rape me," I said.

"Let's not be vulgar," she said tersely. "You have my word. Nothing vile will happen to you on the way to the front porch."

I cautiously entered the open area and jogged across the manicured green grass of the plateau until I arrived at the front porch, where Violet's mother sat in a wicker chair. Next to her, there was a wicker table with a glass top, featuring a large bottle of San Pellegrino and two wineglasses.

She indicated the empty chair across from her. I ascended the stairs and sat on the edge of the seat, tense and ready to bolt.

"I thought you would be thirsty," she said and poured me a glass, which I downed, burning my throat.

"Theo," she said loudly, "bring this lady a warm cloth to wipe her face."

Minutes later, a young boy appeared with a white bowl and cloth. I took it and scrubbed a layer of dirt and grime away, using the time to think. Why was I here?

She studied me as I removed my hair band and redid my pony tail.

"You followed my men here as if you were hunting them."

"They shot my friend," I said matter-of-factly.

"I looked you up," she held up her iPhone as proof. "You aren't just some scrawny little redhead. You've taken down major trafficking rings."

"She's not even American," Theo offered as he stood there waiting for me to finish washing.

"No, I'm not. I'm originally from Poland. What do you want? "

She interrupted me. "Let me finish first. I know who you are. I know what you do. But I'm telling you, leave my mountain. Leave my business alone. Never come back." She stood. "Drink another glass of water and then get off my property."

A flash of lightning streaked across the sky. Thunder rattled the mountain. Tabitha surveyed her domain, her arms raised like a villainous queen from a Disney movie.

She walked across the porch and, before opening the front door, she turned and said, "I can't guarantee whether you make it down to the lowlands. If you do, and dare touch foot on my mountain again- Violet, Payton, and Sawyer die."

I touched my gun, which was wedged in the back of my pants.

"And if you kill me right now, because that's what you're thinking, isn't it? You're more like me than you'd care to admit. Your family dies, including the brown-skinned-terrorist husband of yours." She cackled and slid in the front door.

Theo stood beside me, glaring at me. I handed him the towel and poured myself another glass of water and sipped it. While he fidgeted, I took the time to decide how I wanted to die. My how-to-die plan didn't include -rape, mutilation, or any prolonged and agonizing death.
